5 on Friday!

August 17, 2018 | Entertainment, Lifestyle, Pageants

Hooray, we made it! I didn’t feel like this week would ever end. WHEW!

5 on friday smidge of this carolina charm hello happiness blog

ONE \\ The weather has been super rainy here and fairly ‘cool’ for August. This means 2 things: I am dying for PSL to come back AND it is time to start fall wardrobe refreshing. This quilted monogrammed pullover from MarleyLilly.com is amazing and at the top of my list!

Adorable quilted pullover from marleylilly.com

TWO \\ Wine me and dine me! Tonight is our fall kick-off for Vino League, our small connections church group that I started a few years ago! Four, I think! I’m so proud of this group and the purpose it serves. Obvi, wine is a the reason but deep down, its about forging friendships with people you might not otherwise spend time with outside of church. I have made so many wonderful friends through this group!! This year I have “given the group away” to my dear friend Beth, and she has taken over all the organization of meetings etc. Bless her! Because I had way too much on my plate the last couple of years and this year I have stopped everything except serving my term on church vestry.

Our theme tonight is “bring your favorite” and Andy’s & my go-to is a Louis Jadot Beaujolais-Villages. I love a 2012, but a 2014 is good right now too. I actually drank our last bottle that we had in the wine rack last week, so Andy will have to pick one up on his way home today. My friends always bring fun wines to try and the best food pairings!

My favorite wine, louis jadot beaujolais villages vino league for church at st. john's episcopal church in fort smith arkansas

THREE \\ 53 days until my NASM CPT test. I am not ready. To be honest, I haven’t studied in weeks, until yesterday. I haven’t had the motivation to do anything fitness related, really. The funk has had me down so low… I’m trying to turn that around!

FOUR \\ Olivia has decided not to compete in pageants this year, but to focus 100% of her extra time outside of school on cheer at ACU. I’m proud of her for prioritizing and realizing so early on that if you spread yourself too thin, you won’t be able to give your best to anything at all. I won’t lie, I will miss seeing her on that stage… but I know that I will love watching her on that competition floor even more!

Olivia on stage at a miss arkansas outstanding teen prelim

FIVE \\ Last week, I won tickets to see G-Eazy and Lil Uzi Vert at the AMP. I took Olivia (her first concert!!) The concert started at 6:30 and we won the tickets at like 1pm. I’m super thankful to our neighbor (and Sophia’s bff’s mommy) for having Sophia over to spend the night so Olivia could go with me to the concert. Our friend (and realtor) Cassie was there with her kids, who are good pals with my kids, and we had a big time. Olivia definitely had a great first concert experience. Shout out to Expressions Flowers in Fort Smith for the sweet prize!!

Fun In The Sun: A Day at Parrot Island Water Park

July 30, 2018 | Adventures, Arkansas, Entertainment, Parenting, Swimming Hole Tour

Parrot island water park

Monday is here, and I’m just sitting at my desk dreaming of our super fun in the sun Friday at Parrot Island Water Park last week!

My kids and I love Parrot Island Water Park, so when they reached out to me about hosting us for the day, of course I agreed. We packed our beach bag and headed over for the Cabana Experience.

We live in Fort Smith, which is a fun border town that is growing really quickly… but quick can have many interpretations when we’re talking about the growth of a city. Fort Smith is the 2nd largest city in Arkansas, but sometimes during the summer it can feel suffocating. It is super hot here, and with no recreational waterways near us, you can imagine how ecstatic we were to get a water park in our own back yard. Parrot Island is only about 5 minutes from our house.. ahhh, convenience. 🙂

Parrot Island Water Park where your kids actually get along

One of my favorite things about Parrot Island: my kids somehow manage to actually play together and get along while we are there! Something about water play makes them suddenly become besties. This is reason enough for me to hang out by the wave pool every chance I get.

Parrot Island Water Park Lazy River

Parrot Island Water Park is so fun!!

Crocodile Creek Lazy River is 500 feet of bliss. Well, until your husband and best friend conspire to hold your float under one of the waterfalls along the way! I probably spend most of my time here when I’m not relaxing in a lounge chair.

Meggie and Michelle at Parrot Island Water Park in Fort Smith Arkansas

Parrot Island was very gracious in hosting us. We were able to include our framily in our sunny fun!

Our cabana was next to the Tiny Turtle Island Pool and Splash Area, which is usually Sophia’s favorite place to hang and make new friends.

Parrot Island Water Park Tiny Turtle Island Pool and Splash Area

We always start out in the Tiny Turtle Island Pool and Splash Area. Sophia surprised me on this trip, though. She is finally tall enough to ride the big slides! With a little encouragement from her Daddy, she decided to be brave and give them a try.

Sophia tries the Blue Macaw slide at parrot island water park

I was pretty pumped that she decided to try out a big slide on the day we were there as guests of the park. I had my camera and I was able to stay at the top of the slide area with her to get a couple of photos for this post. Sophia chose to ride the Blue Macaw, which is an open slide. It begins at 30 feet high and is about 200 feet long including all the twists and turns.

Sophia sliding down the Blue Macaw slide at parrot island water park in fort smith arkansas

She has been so scared to try the big slides that end in Toucan’s Cove Activity Pool!

brave Sophia in Toucan's Cove Activity Pool at Parrot Island Water Park in Fort Smith Arkansas

She has become so independent from me this summer. I know that is a wonderful thing… but as a mother it definitely breaks my heart just a little bit! Look at this little fishy, swimming away from the exit of the slides. So big and brave!

The view of the lazy river from the slide tower at parrot island water park in fort smith arkansas

While I was on the slide deck, I snapped a couple of photos of the park. As you can see, the park is lovely with many activities for children (and adults!) of all ages.

It is easy for Sophia to be brave when her Daddy is being brave alongside her.

Andy preparing to ride the tangerine twist slide at parrot island water park in fort smith arkansas

The Tangerine Twist is 35 feet high and almost 200 feet long. This slide has a lot of twists (hence the name), but the surprise is they switch directions mid-slide. The orange makes a great reflector for perfectly lit photos, too. 😉

Such a fun way for Daddy and Daughter to spend an afternoon!

I love this photo of Sophia coming off the Blue Macaw!

Cabana at parrot island water park in fort smith arkansas

Parrot Island Cabana Life is definitely the life for me. When you get a cabana as part of the Mega Splash party package, you literally have it made in the shade…. at least for part of the day. 😉 You are attended to by a sweet host while you’re lounging. We had the sweetest and most attentive host! She even let me take her picture while she was bringing our drinks. There are 3 different party packages so you can choose which services fit your needs the best. Need a cabana? You got it. Don’t need one? You can still have a great party!

our sweet host at parrot island water park in fort smith arkansas

You don’t have to be the birthday girl or boy to get the cabana treatment. Parrot Island hosts groups of all kinds!

We had drinks and pizza and nachos in our cabana, while the kids wandered in and out. I love that there is only one point of entry at Parrot Island. That makes it a lot easier for me to relax and allow my kids some freedom in the park. I know they are safe there.

Sophia and the lifeguard crew at parrot island water park in fort smith arkansas

The amount of lifeguards also makes me feel safe! They’re super friendly and I can tell that they really love their jobs, and that they’re good at what they do. Sophia loved having her picture taken with some of them.

pizza in our private cabana at parrot island water park in fort smith arkansas

Cabana Life: The pizza is always super cheesy (Sophia’s fave). I can’t say enough how much I enjoy being able to bring my kids to Parrot Island for the day. They feel like they’re getting a mini-vacation, and I’m not breaking the bank.

Olivia and friends at parrot island water park in fort smith arkansas

Another perk of our hometown water park: your kids will almost always run into their friends! This is ultra convenient for me… because they go hang with their friends and give me some peace. haha! It also means there are more eyes on Sophia because she will usually follow her sister around to do whatever she is doing. Lucky for Sophia she’s adorable and most of Olivia’s friends adore her. Who doesn’t?

Olivia and Meg at the wave pool at parrot island water park in fort smith arkansas

So when I’m not living my best life in one of the cabanas, you can usually find me reading a book on the lounge chairs in front of the Caribbean Splash Wave Pool. This pool holds 85,000 gallons of water and that number amazes me every time I read it!

I love watching all the little kids play in the shallow part of the wave pool while their cute little mommies sit in the “surf” keeping an eye on them. I love people watching so the wave pool lounge area is a prime piece of real estate.

parrot island water park in fort smith arkansas

In the grassy area near the entrance of the park, there are activities that go on for guests throughout the day. From hula-hoop contests to the limbo, Parrot Island Water Park has your kid covered when it comes to summer fun!

Andy and Sophia in the Crocodile Creek Lazy River at Parrot Island Water Park in Fort Smith Arkansas

Parrot Island definitely strives to have community events going all season long. With Value Days (the next one is August 6, by the way), Family Nights (3 left this season: August 1, August 7, and August 8, from 3p.m.-7p.m.), Tiny Tot Time (for guests 5 and under, August 2 & 9), and Aqua Jogging (which I think is so cool) for guests 40 and older (August 2 & 9), there is something for everyone. Each of these events have special pricing, you can find out more here.

Sophia the Mermaid at parrot island water park in fort smith arkansas

Sophia and Olivia are both looking forward to the Back to School Splash (sponsored by 5News!!). There are a few opportunities to enjoy this huge event! August 18, 19, 25, and 26 are all back to school splash days. The party carries over in to September, on the 1, 2, and 3rd. $9 for kids taller than 48″ and $5 if you’re under 48″. We anticipate running into all our friends from all over town during these splash bash days.

I had so much fun spending my day at Parrot Island Water Park with my husband, my best friend, and our kids. You know the water park is the most fun place in town when your 18 year old niece drives over from Mulberry to spend the afternoon splashing around! Thanks to Andy for this one photo of Michelle and me on our fun day!

Tiny Turtle Island Pool and Splash Area at Parrot Island Water Park in Fort Smith Arkansas

Parrot Island closes at 7p.m. on regular park days. As you can see from this photo, we soaked up every available minute of fun in the sun.

Welcome To Parrot Island Water Park in Fort Smith Arkansas

Mahalo from Parrot Island! I hope you enjoyed this post… probably not as much as I enjoyed writing it, though. I say it every year (since Parrot Island opened), and I’ll say it again I’m sure: I am so happy we have an economical, close-by, fun, clean, and safe place for our kids to play and hang out during the summer. Keeping our kids busy and involved is really important in keeping them out of trouble.

2019 season passes go on sale August 1, and you can get 10% off if you purchase next year’s season pass before this year’s season is over. That is a great deal and you will definitely use your season pass!

Thank you so much to Parrot Island for hosting us for the day. We had a blast and we will definitely be back again and again… and again.

All opinions and photographs in this post are my own.

Reader Q & A

July 27, 2018 | Entertainment, Lifestyle

Super fun reader q&a

TGIF y’all! I am super excited that today is F R I D A Y. We are closing our office early and lounging around our local water park for the rest of the day! What are you up to?

I thought I would do something different, and super fun in this blog post. My last post, while important for my heart and soul, was a bit heavy. I know, I know. Thank you so much to everyone who read what I had to say about my struggles.

Today I am going to ask YOU some questions, and I want you to leave your answers in the comments! I love the small tribe I’m building here, and knowing who you actually are is important to me!

Ok, here we go! I’m going to answer the questions below the actual list of questions… I want it to be easy for you to copy and paste!

  1. Where are you from?
  2. Where do you actually consider home?
  3. What is your favorite song?
  4. What do you order at Starbucks (or your local coffee shop)?
  5. If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?
  6. Is exercise important to you? What do you do to stay healthy?
  7. What is the number one item on your bucket list?
  8. What is your dream job?
  9. Who is your favorite musical artist (or band)? Have you seen them live?
  10. Do you have a guilty pleasure TV show?
  11. Tell the truth, do you like country music?
  12. What was your favorite movie as a kid?
  13. What did you want to be when you grew up?
  14. Is there something you’ve always dreamed of doing but feel like it is too far out of your comfort zone? What is it?
  15. What is your favorite candy?

These are some super fun questions, and I feel like we’re playing a game of desert island together! Andy, the kids, and I play desert island at least twice a week during the school year when we eat around the table together every night. Summer time is so crazy busy that we just go our separate ways for dinner usually. Well, except this week. My sweet husband has cooked dinner for us every night for the last week, on top of working every day. I think he’s having fun, he hasn’t asked me to cook at all. *disclaimer* I am a really, really great cook. So my cooking skills aren’t why he’s cooking, haha!

Time for my answers!

  1. I am from Greers Ferry, Arkansas.
  2. Greers Ferry is home, but so is Savannah, Tennessee, where we bought our first house after we got married. I hated it for a while but it grew on me after a few years and I was really sad to leave when we did.
  3. My favorite song of all time is Glycerine by Bush. My favorite song right now is Nonstop by Drake. His new album is just so, so good!
  4. I order a venti americano with 3 ice cubes when its cold out. In the summer I order a trenta iced coffee, no sweetener, with 2 pumps sugar free vanilla and 2 pumps sugar free caramel.
  5. Tacos. I can eat tacos every day and never get tired of them!
  6. Yes. It is. Exercise not only makes me feel good in my own skin, but it really helps me combat my anxiety and depression. I talked about my struggles with those issues here, and without exercise I fall into the dark hole. I know this, so I’m not sure why I’m not more consistent. I am working on that! I love lifting and my favorite program I’ve ever followed is Simply Shredded. I’m studying to become a personal trainer now, and I’m excited to put together my own programs.
  7. Move to St. Thomas USVI. 3rd time is a charm, right? It will happen one day!
  8. Oh man. Being a flight attendant. Being a stay at home mom. Being a personal trainer, a gym owner, a boutique owner, someone with enough influence over a group of people to sustain a comfortable lifestyle while traveling and being available for my husband and kids.
  9. Bush. And yes!! Last year. It was amazing. Drake is, too, and I’m dying to go see him in Houston this fall.
  10. the Office. I watch it on repeat. Right now Andy is sick of the office (whaaaaaat?!) so we are watching workaholics. Its a funny show, but it is kinda gross. I am also obsessed with Bob’s Burgers. Luckily, Andy loves it too. The Golden Girls, not so much.
  11. I love country music, no shame. haha. Country gold, 90s country, and yeah, I even like some of the new bro country. Don’t hate me cuz you ain’t me. hahahaha
  12. Disney: Sleeping Beauty and the Little Mermaid. Non-Disney: Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls. My poor grandma has seen it about one million times thanks to me and my sister.
  13. I never really knew. I always just said, I want to move to California. I wasn’t the most focused or driven child/teenager.
  14. I dream of doing a lot of things, but the comfort zone isn’t my barrier. I’m crazy outgoing. Time has been a barrier, and money at times. That is common for everyone though, right?
  15. I love all candy. I’m a sugar addict. Working on that right now! 3 muskateers, caramello bars, sour patch kids, sour punch straws, and twizzlers. Now, I’m hungry. ha!

I can’t wait to read your answers, and get to know each other better. 🙂

When All I Wish Is To Travel

July 18, 2018 | Accessories, Adventures, Entertainment, Fashion, Lifestyle

Give Away Closed! The Winner is…

Christie S.!!!

Please email me graceandjeancollective@gmail.com with your address and watch band preference (white or brown).

Thank you all so much for entering!!!

Hi friends! If you’ve been around me very long at all, you know that all I wish is to wander. Travel the globe. See everything and experience all kinds of cultures. I got to spend some of my 20s traveling, but not nearly enough. Although, I don’t really think that I could ever feel like any amount of wandering was ‘enough.’

The strongest of all warriors are these two-- time and patience. Click To Tweet -Leo Tolstoy

Something that I freak out about a lot, is time. Y’all know I just had a birthday, I’m 34 now, and time is really getting away from me (or so I feel). I look around at the people my own age around me and I see one of two things. We are either wanderers or we are parents. I’m not really sure how I feel about that, ya know?

I have always had a strong urge to roam, and I have also had an affinity for maps my entire life. Not that I am an expert map reader or anything, but they always remind me that adventure is out there waiting for me! My mom has several maps hanging in my parents’ home, and someday I hope to have just as many!

One thing I am dying to do is put a huge sheet of metal in our entryway, and attach every postcard from every far off destination we have ever been. Everywhere we have been, I grab a couple of extras to keep for us. This metal sheet is on my honey-do list. Too bad it is about 20 miles long!

The trouble is, you think you have time. Click To Tweet -Buddha

So you can imagine, when I saw these beautiful watches, I knew I had to have one. The face of the watch is a map of the world, and it reminds me that hey, the world is yours, and you do have time.

I love this watch so much, I have partnered with the Outdoor Unique to give one lucky reader a world map watch, too!

world map watch with faux leather band, double wrapped, metal studs

Isn’t the distressed faux leather beautiful?! Truthfully, I like everything to look distressed, old and weathered.

The bands on these watches double wrap your wrist for a nice layered look. The metal studs along the band add great character.

I also love the brown because who doesn’t love a classic brown (faux) leather?

Now, I know, you are probably like “WHOA THERE, NELLY. I have a smartwatch!” That’s cool and all, I too am a slave to my apple watch.

However. I hate it when I go out and get all dressed up and what accompanies my outfit: the smartwatch. Nope, not a fashion statement, haha. I don’t want my apple watch being the thing that draws the eye to my outfit!

faux leather watch world map watch fashion watch fashion jewelry

Since I love these watches so much, I can’t choose which one to keep for myself and which one to use as the prize for this wonderful give-away! I will let the winner choose the watch band they prefer, and I’ll keep the other one. They’ll both go with everything in my closet!

To enter*:

Leave a comment on this post telling me what your dream travel destination is! You can also let me know which color watch band you’d prefer, if you win, too!

Go over to my instagram account and give me a follow! I can’t say just yet, but… there are probably, maybe, definitely more give aways coming soon! Go follow Outdoor Unique – the cutest boutique for all the things you need to be stylish in your travels.

Arkansas Swimming Hole Tour 2018 – Natural Dam

July 4, 2018 | Adventures, Arkansas, Entertainment, Swimming Hole Tour

Arkansas is a magical place full of natural beauty. If you read my last Arkansas Swimming Hole Tour 2018 post, you saw some gorgeous photos of Kings River Falls.

Arkansas Swimming Hole Tour 2018 www.graceandjean.com \\ a lifestyle and parenting blog

Today I am writing about Natural Dam, which is quite a bit closer to my house than Kings River Falls, and doesn’t involve any dirt roads so no flat tires. Woo!

From my house to Natural Dam, is about half an hour, maybe forty minutes (depending on if you take the interstate or not). The parking is ample and there is no hiking necessary to get to the swimming hole.

Natural Dam, Arkansas Swimming Hole Tour 2018

It had just rained before we went, and the waterfalls were epic! Just like the name suggests, this is indeed a ‘natural dam.’ Above the waterfalls is waist deep or so, and people bring tubes and pool floats and have a great time! With Sophia, I prefer to hang at the bottom of the falls where it varies from ankle to knee depth depending on rainfall.

This place is dog friendly too, but you can never tell how many people will be here on any given day. As you can see, it was deserted on this day, but the next time I went it was a full on party.

Natural Dam, Arkansas Swimming Hole Tour 2018, dog friendly swimming and hiking in Arkansas

Drake is not really sure about water, no matter how many times or places we take him to. You’ll have to excuse his ratchet hair, we tried to groom him ourselves and as you can see… it is not our forte.

The water here is super clean, and there are tons of little fishies and moss in the shallow part.

We like to bring our beach chairs and beach toys so Sophia can play her heart out. The pool narrows into a creek and there is a one lane bridge over it. There are large culverts and Sophia always finds other kids to play with and they go through the culverts from one side to another constantly. The water is rarely too deep or fast for that, but definitely use your best judgement.

Natural Dam, Arkansas Swimming Hole Tour 2018

The joys of having a teenage daughter: I always have a model no matter where we go or what we are doing. 🙂

There is no sand here, just huge piles of rocks and pebbles, so don’t expect to walk around barefoot unless you have really tough feet! On one side of the shallow pool, there are some really large flat rocks, but unfortunately, I’ve never been there and not seen a bunch of trash around that area.

Natural Dam, Arkansas Swimming Hole Tour 2018

Where Olivia is standing is my favorite spot at this swimming hole.

The water pools right there, and it has a gentle current from the falls. The area is perfectly shaded and easy to get to. We moved our beach chairs up there for the last half of our trip, because we were in need of refuge from the sun at that point. It was very relaxing and you can see the entirety of the falls, and the creek beyond.

You can also see the parking area which is a bonus if you’re worried about your vehicle. I left my key in the car so I wouldn’t lose it, so being able to see the parking area was a plus.

This is a swimming hole we have visited a few times, because of proximity and how clean the water is. There is a trail that goes down the creek on the top of the falls if you’d like to hike. We tried it last year but it was a little overgrown and we ended up getting ticks… and we haven’t tried again. Besides, I would rather plop down at the waters edge and relax!

Again, if you choose to frequent one of these natural swimming holes, please leave no trace!

Clean up after yourself and if you see random garbage, do everyone a solid and pick it up, too.

Loving this series? Me too! I’m having so much fun with my family exploring and documenting. Make sure you comment and share! I appreciate it so much!
